The Naro-Fominsk Museum of Local Lore was opened in Naro-Fominsk on May 9, 1973 in the building of the former Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, which housed the first exposition dedicated to the events of the Great Patriotic War.

The museum building became an integral part of the memorial complex, which included: Grave of the Unknown Soldier, Eternal Flame, T-34 tank and two anti-aircraft guns. Many enterprises and organizations of the city took an active part in the creation of this memorial complex and, directly, the museum exposition, and the role of the former Chairman of the Naro-Fominsk City Council, I.E. Klochkov, is significant in this matter.

In 1991, the Administration of the Naro-Fominsk district provided the museum with a new building at 8 Marshal Zhukov Street, where in 1995-1996 an exposition was built on an area of 750 square meters.m. telling about the history of the city of Naro-Fominsk and Naro-Fominsk district for the period from ancient times to the end of the Great Patriotic War.

Since June 1996, the museum has become a municipal cultural institution of the Naro-Fominsk district. Currently, the museum has more than 25 thousand exhibits.

In 2023, the Naro-Fominsk Museum of Local Lore will introduce a network unit, the Military-Patriotic Club "Memory", located at 49 "a" Kryukovo village, 143321, Moscow Region, Naro-Fominsk City District.
